Here they are! Our first Mama Nguvu candidates for you to see. Help empower these mothers by donating toward their business and know that your 100% of your donation will help them send their children to school.
You can fully fund a candidate or donate a specific amount toward a project.
Using the PayPal button, enter the amount of your donation and specify the Mama you wish to sponsor. You can specify when Paypal asks you to review your donation. There is a button that states “add special instructions to the seller” near the top left that will allow you to tell us which Mama you are supporting. Mobile devices may show it in a different location.
If you write a cheque, please write on the Memo line that it is for Mama Nguvu and which Mama the money is for. Then send Erika an email to let her know so that she can update this page with the amount raised.
All donations in Canada over $20 will get a tax receipt.
We’ll send you a photo and updates about your Mama. You can also email a personal note to share with her if you would like.
We would love to see all these ladies fully sponsored before we leave at the end of July. When we return next year, the Mamas who have been sponsored will contribute toward another business and will thus “pay it forward” to another Mama Nguvu candidate.

Esther Achom: 28, married with 3 dependants 10,6 & 3. Currently she works as a tailor making women’s clothing but is on a rented machine. She wants her own electric sewing machine and 3 rolls of kitenge fabric.

Angella Asio, 22, single with 2 dependants 7 & 5. She has completed a two-year Fashion and Design Tailoring course at Meeting Point Fashion and Design school. She currently makes school uniforms and gomesi (traditional Ugandan dresses). She wants an electric sewing machine and 4 rolls of polyester/cotton fabric.

Suzan Tino, 28, married with 5 dependants 14, 9, 7, 3, & 10 months. She owns a tailoring shop. She wants fabric to make school uniforms and 36 metres of kitenge.

Lorna Kalenda, 40, married with 4 dependants 18,15,12, & 8. She knits sweaters for schools and general public customers but is on a rented machine. She wants her own knitting loom and 12 spools of knitting thread. She has purchased approx. $45 of thread already through personal savings.

Francoise Laku, 38, widowed with 4 dependants 17, 15, 14, & 10. She brews and sells waragi (Ugandan gin). Her husband was killed recently in the South Sudan conflict. Her large brewing barrels were stolen last year and she has been unable to replace them so now brews in small batches which limits how much she can sell. Demand exceeds supply. She wants new barrels and jerry cans as well as a special sieving pan.

Florence Baka, 30, married with 5 dependants 15, 13, 10, 7, & 6. She is a tailor but works on a shared machine some distance from her house. She took a 5-month training course to learn to tailor. She refurbishes old clothes and sells them. She wants a treadle sewing machine, one roll of polyester fabric, and a bag of used clothes to refurbish.

Rovence Nakanwagi, 43, single with 5 dependants 24, 19, 17, 14, & 7. She cooks and sells local food in a small market stall. She cooks and delivers her food locally but she also has branched into off-site catering due to customer demand. She is stymied by lack of equipment to fulfil catering orders. She wants 5 saucepans, 12 plates, 48 cups, 24 spoons and 24 forks, two food warmers, 6 serving platters and 3 buckets and a refrigerator. The refrigerator will be kept at her home and used to cool soda for the catering orders.

Adrine Atuhairwe, 22, single, 5 dependants 15, 14, 6, 5, 4. The first four dependants are from her brother and sister, both of whom are deceased. She cooks and sells popcorn but uses a rented machine. She sells over 50KG of popcorn per week. She wants her own machine, two cans of cooking oil and one 100kg bag of popcorn.

Margaret Nakalema, 58, single, 3 dependants 20, 17, 12. She is a matron at a school and sews and sells school uniforms and costumes. She took a 1-year course to learn to tailor. She wants an electric sewing machine and a roll of fabric.

Patience Atim, 19, single, 1 dependant 3yrs. She makes and sells paper bead jewellery to a vendor who then sells to the public. Currently she must go across the city and pay to use a paper cutter in order to make her beads. She wants a paper cutter to eliminate this expense and increase her production. She also wants a sun umbrella so that she can sell directly to the public.

Harriet Lakot, 28, married, 5 dependants 18, 7, 7, 4, & 1. The 18-yr old is a step-daughter. She tailors but her machine is old and worn out so she can only do small jobs. She wants a treadle sewing machine and a roll of fabric.

Marina Achayo, 37, single with 3 dependants 13, 11, & 8. She cooks and sells local food at a market. She wants to open a fish selling stall. She wants to rent a stall, a selling license, a bucket and polythene bags.
